My Blog’s Purpose

This is a Beta blog.

I began this blog for several reasons:

This blog is an outlet and a motivation for me to write.
It had been a long time since I had written anything. One of the benefits of my recent “life transition” has been to do intense reflection upon who I am, what I am passionate about, what I’m good at, what I want to do and who do I want to be. Part of that self-searching resulted in me dusting off being a writer. It’s something that I have been told I’m good at and have been paid to do (be patient St. Martins) and when I’m in the zone, I enjoy doing. But to be honest, and you can ask any writer, writing is hard work. It takes discipline and everyday you live with the pressure to be creative, to be original, to be productive and with the secret fear that you’ll be found out for the hack that you truly are. Oddly enough, these are the same pressures I faced as a minister! When you’re like me and have lived most of your life committed to immediate gratification: don’t become a pastor, a farmer, nor a writer. This blog is an outlet and a motivation for me to write. Regarding the content of this blog, the discipline will exist in converting convoluted & nebulous concepts and ideas into coherent words. Sometimes the discipline will be more banal and relate to how to take what I’m thinking and just make a good sentence. Other times the discipline is creatively communicating my heart in compelling ways. You’ll see me struggling with them all here.

This blog will help me to explore life’s purpose.
Nearly half of my life has been committed to helping people. Now I don’t say this with some kind of martyr complex, I’m no Mother Theresa. However upon reflection, there is clearly this trend in my life. Sometimes it had manifested itself through volunteering and other times as a vocation. Regardless of the outlet, it’s obvious that it is something that I’m bent to do. Since I no longer occupy the profession of helping people that I once held, I’ve been searching for a purpose to live for and through which I could be available to help others. This blog is one of the vehicles for me to explore how I can help others and fulfill that calling. Whether it be spiritual, life management, counseling, consulting, mentoring or eco issues; I am attempting to navigate the uncharted paths and passions of my life. This blog will help me to find the rhythm in which I am created to live.

This blog will help me to share interesting things with others.
Anyone who has ever sought to inspire others, whether you’re a poet, professor, preacher or pundit, has asked themselves; why would anyone listen to me?  I don’t come up with original thought provoking ideas to write about everyday. My muse is fickle. So throughout the week I like to sprinkle my blog with thought provoking ideas from other people. Some of these are amusing, some interesting and some silly. One thing is for sure, they will all be awesome.

So, in this beta stage of my blog, you find me exploring all kinds of avenues of thought and life. You’re contribution as a reader and commenter are priceless. Your participation and responses will help me to test the wind and encourage me to push on and grow.

Eventually I will leave this wordpress format and attempt a more entrepreneurial website where my blog will exist alongside some other creative endeavors in writing, consulting and speaking.

Well, there you go. This is my blog. Enjoy yourself and invite a friend. Let me know what you think.

Godspeed,
John
